Success for me is waking up and wanting to go to work whilst also  being able to meet the demands of parenting. Its a feeling of happiness and contentment of doing something with intention and on purpose, which Id do whether I was paid or not. Ive had this at times whilst being employed, and Im there now with my business. I also think the definition of success has changed throughout my career, in the beginning, it was defined more by position, progression and pay, but now Im more focused on feeling valued and being of value by doing something I enjoy. Because I enjoy it, for me it removes any guilt I might otherwise feel about being a working mother, in fact, Id argue Im happier because of my work and therefore Im a better mother for it. My vision is that women hold between 30-60% of leadership and management positions, we achieve parity in pay, there are far more affordable childcare plus greater maternity and paternity leave entitlements, that men and women take equal responsibility for parenting and in doing so the stigma associated with working mothers is removed, that workplaces become family friendly initiated by a culture change from the top down, that women stay in their feminine power and not succumb to the masculine way of working because it is gender diversity and these differences that create successful businesses and teams, that women continue and do more to support each other to rise, and finally, that gender equality and parity in pay exists in our lifetime. 7.     How do you define ‘flexibility’? Flexibility is the ability of a company to modify their working practices both in terms of hours and location to accommodate a greater workforce, which is actively encouraged to be taken up by everyone within the business. On being asked to write a post about my internship as a Software Engineer at Google, I realised that merely describing what spending four months at a major tech company is like just wouldnt do. I did other internships before going to Google, and my experiences at each have all contributed to who I am; I suppose it’s unsurprising that I feel moulded in this way, considering that these programmes are designed to grow and nurture students into somebody efficacious and employable. As far as I can see, employers are looking for three things in new graduates; qualifications, qualities and experience. Since I’m writing to students at The University of Manchester, I’m going to assume that you’ll be suitably qualified when it’s time to look for graduate roles; a strong set of A-levels, and an Honours degree (lets assume everything goes well) will make up the backbone of a strong graduate job application. However, the other two dimensions of an ideal candidate qualities and experience have a far more ephemeral path to fulfilment, with no ‘set formula’ (ie. work hard and pass your exams) like getting qualifications has. It’s easy to consider soft skills as easily acquired, less important trivialities in the grand scheme of things; boiling down to a good phone manner, grammatically correct emails and the ability to hold a conversation at the water cooler. Yet I think the phrase encapsulates far more than just being able to communicate. I was exposed to office politics for the first time on a previous internship, where I witnessed a meeting in which software engineers from two teams literally argued over which data format to use when encoding messages and where project allocation could be a function of your manager’s standing with your department’s VP. At Google, I realised how a seemingly large and intractable problem could be decomposed into small, independent and manageable chunks to be solved one at a time. While rarely revelatory, these skills can only really be learnt by doing, and if youve acquired them as an intern, then you can really hit the ground running after graduation. While I don’t consider myself an extrovert by any means, meeting new, interesting people is certainly a hobby of mine. Ive found internships to be an excellent way of expanding my social horizons outside an immediate peer group. Ive been lucky enough to intern with people from a diverse set of backgrounds, and can now count students and alumni of Stanford, Princeton, Harvard, Cambridge, Imperial, MIT and many more universities of note as my friends, plus Ive had the chance to work with people with all sorts of amazing interests, such as those who compete in ballroom dancing, Sudoku and Rubiks Cube speed-solving world championships (those are not the same person). If the phase “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” holds any merit, then growing your ‘network’ as early as possible in your career should see a very good return on investment in the future. But let’s not forget, the internship programmes of most companies are designed to be fun, and since they’re aimed at students, tend to involve plenty of opportunities for travelling, partying and other pastimes favoured among our generation. Morgan Stanley put on regular drinks events for us in Canary Wharf, as well as the promise of a month of expenses-paid training in New York should we accept offers to become full-time employees. I now have a graduate role as a Software Engineer at Google (starting in December), and while I passed my interviews, according to my recruiter, what really convinced their hiring committee to extend me an offer was the work I did on my internships there. Without an internship, perhaps my interviews alone wouldnt have passed muster with no feedback from my peers to support them. Internships really are a competitive advantage! Lastly, I want to point out that while applying for (and undertaking) internships at big companies may seem really quite daunting, there is absolutely nothing to lose (except perhaps time) from having a go; I have been rejected from more internships and jobs than Ive been successful, and there’s really nothing to fear from the pain of rejection. I asked him to share some thoughts about his 15 month (!!) transition, and thats what this post is. I hope it gives you hope, inspiration and motivation. I found it simple yet powerful. Enjoy! After I landed in my new position Jason asked me to write a guest post reflecting back on my job search. Well its been 2 months which I hope is sufficient time to look back with a more balanced view (Jason would no doubt say its been 2 months What are you waiting for? )My search lasted 15 months and while not uncommon for the type of position I was seeking it did often generate comments regarding attitude specifically about how I was able to maintain a positive attitude throughout the search.I wont bother telling you how I came to be unemployed because frankly you dont care. And thats the first lesson. In various networking group meeting you could always tell the newly unemployed. They always spent most of their 30-second commercial talking about their situation. It would almost make you want to scream I dont care! It wasnt that I dont feel their pain  and sympathize/empathize. It is just that what happened is past and there is nothing I can do about it. I can only be of assistanc e in your future and your dwelling on the past is not helping either of us. In these situations I flashback to the movie The Fugitive.  It has a famous scene where the hero, Dr. Richard Kimble, proclaims his innocence and Marshall Sam Gerard simply replies I don’t care!  Its a great reminder to let go of the past and focus on your future. It may sound harsh but no employer cares about what happened to you, they only care about what you can do for them. If I could tell based on that 30-second commercial that people werent ready to move on and be productive employees again you can bet a prospective hiring manager can tell it also. Your unemployed, get over it. Sounds easy, right? The truth is, of course, its not. The second piece of advice I would give is to surround yourself with positive giving people. If you hang out with people that bitch about their old boss, about the unfairness of being outsourced, the bad economy or their company being sold youll probably fall into that same trap. Being positive is contagious so hang out with positive people. I was fortunate enough to be in Houston and join Between Jobs Ministries. They offered help, support and advice and perhaps more importantly the opportunity for me to help others. The also formed Job Search Work Teams based on Orville Piersons methods. These were tremendous positive influences and greatly aided my job search. Along with this it extremely helpful to get some close job search partners that can help you with your search by encouraging you, buoying you up when your down, offering to act as a sounding board and simply being a friend. I was fortunate to have people such as Jason Alb a, Gerry Fusco and Kent Blumberg among others as my partners and friends. I had a recruiter tell me once that he was more likely to help people he liked. Which when you think about it is not surprising. We all want to be around and work with people that are likable and attitude has an awful lot to do with it. Being unemployed isnt easy or fun but to get through it you need to have a friend and you need to be a friend. Good luck. When are you available to start?If they ask this late in a face-to-face interview, its a sign your interview went well. However, if youre hearing it in a phone interview, theyre usually just trying to get a sense of your availability and current job hunt situation.So If youre currently employed, tell them youd need to give a two week noticeto your current employer (or whatever i s standard in your company).Example:Id need to give my current employer a two-week notice, and then I was hoping to take one week off before starting. So I could be available to start three weeks after a job offer is accepted.If youre unemployed, you can still tell them youd like one or two weeks before starting, but its up to you. What motivates you?Motivation is a concern every employer has, no matter how talented/qualified you are. If youre not coming to work motivated, your work will suffer. So theyre likely to ask one or two phone interview questions to find out what drives you, what interests you, etc.And one of the most common of these questions is, what motivates you to come to work each day?You should be able to name something other than money if you want to impress the interviewer with this question. Do some thinking ahead of time and come up with the reason you plan on giving.15.
